Best known for painting women, wine, and the sensual, she cites as her biggest influences John Singer Sargent, the Mexican muralists, Sue Coe, James Montgomery Flagg, Russian realism, and Berte Morisot.

Carrera attended Weber State University in the early 1990s, and finished her BFA and MFA degrees at Utah State University in Logan, Utah. A teacher and mentor was Glen Edwards. She is a member of the College Art Association, and received the View of Five Fellowship from the Salt Lake City Arts Center competition in the mid 1990s.

Her work is in the collection of Weber State University, Utah State University, and the Art Academy of Cincinnati.
