The Hamsa is a Middle Eastern symbol of good luck intended to ward off evil and protect its wearer. Israeli designer Michal Golan integrates both the cultural importance and the mystical significations of the symbol in her Hamsa line. She invigorates the Hamsa through the use of gems, colors, and texture; while maintaining the original integrity of the Hamsa through traditional designs and shapes.

Michal was born in Haifa, Israel and came to the US in her twenties to study art. She began designing jewelry and selling it at craft fairs in order to support herself while completing a Masters degree in Studio Art at NYU. Demand for her jewelry quickly grew and in 1982 she launched Michal Golan Jewelry. Michal’s husband, Michael, joined her and they soon moved the company out of their apartment and into a studio in Hell’s Kitchen, NYC. Over the first few years, what started as a two person team grew into a team of over twenty employees. Throughout all this, Michal has stayed committed to creating high quality jewelry, with every piece still crafted by hand in her NYC studio. Each Michal Golan piece has the intricacy, attention to detail, and commitment to an aesthetic vision that one would expect from a piece of art. The complexity of the jewelry comes as no surprise given that Michal began her career as an artist and continues to pursue both ceramics and illustration.
